As millions of workers across the world stay home because of COVID-19, food systems workers are continuing to operate in the fields and packing plants, with rising numbers of infections, death, and impact on our rural and agricultural communities. In response to this crisis, Project Protect Food Systems is partnering with Cultivando, Colorado Legal Services, to support health equity in agricultural communities by supporting the development of a Promotora Network. successful model for creating health equity in our communities.
Led by Olga Gonzalez and Rocio Franco of Cultivando, the first training for the new Project Protect Promotora Program was in the San Luis Valley September 11-13th. The training focused on uplifting the work that the identified community workers have already been doing and focused on building tools for working with agriculture workers and for being mentally and physically safe. The last part focused on understanding the legal system and guidances and protections for agriculture workers led by Jenifer Redriguez of the Migrant Workers Division of the Colorado Legal Defense Fund. The Project Protect Promotora Network covers all of Colorado and focuses on four combined regions: SouthEastern Colorado, Western Slope, North, and Southwest (San Luis Valley). Trainings in other regions are taking place over over the next two weeks.
Project Protect Food Systems (PPFS) is a coalition representing immigrants, farmers, scholars, activists, unions, and workers across Colorado working to identify, elevate and address the needs of the people who contribute their labor to all parts of the food system.
Immigrant workers make up 70% of the agricultural labor force across the nation are also some of the most vulnerable to COVID-19 and for whom lack of health insurance, substandard working and living conditions are as much occupational hazards as is respiratory disease. The safety of food systems workers is the safety of our food systems and the safety of our state and nation.
The Promotora Model, which is built on the understanding that in order to meaningfully increase health equity in our communities, community leaders of color must be at the table and involved in identifying the barriers and creating the solutions as well as being involved in decisions about activities that may affect their communities’ environment and/or health. When COVID response in frontline communities isn’t done in a culturally responsive way, it has immediate negative impacts and can contribute to future outbreaks and overall local community insecurity.
PPFS believes that we are only as safe as our most vulnerable workers and subjugation of farm and food system workers is structural racism and must be undone. As food is necessary and workers in the food system essential, protections and health promotion must be available, culturally responsive, and effective.

Cuando la respuesta de COVID en las comunidades de primera línea no se realiza de una manera culturalmente receptiva, tiene impactos negativos inmediatos y puede contribuir a futuros brotes y la inseguridad de la comunidad local en general.
PPFS cree que estamos tan seguros como nuestros trabajadores más vulnerables y la subyugación de los trabajadores agrícolas y del sistema alimentario es un racismo estructural y debe deshacerse. Dado que los alimentos son necesarios y los trabajadores del sistema alimentario son esenciales, las protecciones y la promoción de la salud deben estar disponibles, ser culturalmente sensibles y eficaces.
